Restoration and Protection of Jingzhou Ancient Town, Hubei Province

In 1982, Jingzhou was published as one of the first batch of nationwide famous historical cultural cities, and falls within traditional urban style. Jingzhou has rich historical cultural resources, which has not only unique and complete ancient city wall and the Three-country Stories and Guangong Relics well known by Chinese but also Jingzhou is capital of Chu State and Chu cultural center, which gathered brilliant Chinese civilization.
Since Jingzhou Ancient City Wall was published as nationwide key cultural relic protection unit in 1996, it has been listed into the tentative list of World Cultural Heritages that China applied for to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. However, fast economic development has adversely affected on execution of the former planning and environment regulations. The infrastructures are behind the times etc so that the cultural relic protection are facing great pressure. Currently, there is little ancient architectural relics remained in the ancient city wall. The reserved a little number of ancient buildings and city walls facing growing danger of damage due to shortage of maintenance, uncontrolled sewage drainage into the moat, land use conflict and redevelopment etc.
Under the large background that the cultural heritages are paid more and more attentions in the whole country, Jingzhou also pays more attention to protection and reasonable utilization of the cultural heritages. Jingzhou Municipal Government specially put forward the proposal of the “restoration and protection project of Jingzhou Ancient City Wall” by aiming at protection and utilization of the ancient city wall cultural heritage after long-term comprehensive consideration, and has carried out comprehensive work including restoration of the ancient city wall, water system environment control inside and outside the ancient city wall, improvement of traffic and relevant tourist facilities, construction of green belt around the ancient town, upgrade of the museum, protection of Kaiyuan Temple, restoration and protection of Confucian Temple as well as construction of the institution’s capability etc to continuously support protection and utilization of the cultural heritages.
This project has been assessed and praised by experts from the World Bank.
