The adaptive city workshop will addresses the many questions concerning adaptation, renewal and enduring development in historical central city locations. Our project site stretches from the Pipa printing factories down to the Yangtse River and the island of the old airport and has a dramatic topography, diverse functions & architectures and rich histories. The skyline of Chongqing’s walled city has radically changed in modern times - what form should the future city and Pipa Shan take? The historic relationship between city and river has been compromised by busy roads and underused buildings - how can we resurrect a contemporary version of this fundamental dynamic? How can we entwine public domain with private space? How can we combine the roles of public government and local needs with private sector investment and commercial priorities? The challenge for the architect and urban designer is to understand these complex interactions and negotiations and to use them as a basis for a new set of proposals for the site. The goal is to create meaningful urban spaces and architectures with tangible links to the city’s past while confidently being part of the present.
